Zezhen Hao, Ph.D. Student

Education

Zezhen Hao joined Chen Group as a Ph.D. student in Spring 2024.

He completed his B.S. in the Department of Environmental Science and Safety Engineering at Tianjin University of Technology. During this time, he joined a project for a sponge city stormwater management system. After that, he got his M.S. in Environmental Health and Engineering at Johns Hopkins University in 2023. While at Hopkins, he worked at Dr. Alan Stone’s group focusing on redox speciation and electrochemical probing in AMBIC media. He used chelating agents and hydrous manganese oxides to find the optimum concentration of metal ions and organic matter in growth media. During this period, he developed a strong interest in electrochemistry. So after graduation, he joined Dr. Ruggero Rossi’s group for reducing hexavalent chromium with benzene derivatives to reduce environmental pollution. At the same time, he also used electrochemical techniques to measure the redox state.

Zezhen will continue his focus on electrochemistry during his Ph.D. study. He will work on the design and development of novel electrode materials for water purification and resource recovery.

Outside the lab, Zezhen enjoys traveling and making friends from different countries and cultures. He is also interested in skiing and fishing.
